Greater Porto is the entity responsible for the management of the municipal solid waste produced by the municipalities of Espinho, Gondomar, Maia, Matosinhos, Porto, Póvoa de Varzim, Valongo and Vila do Conde.
Lipor developed an integrated valorisation, treatment and confinement strategy for the municipal solid waste (MSW) based in there main components:
- Multimaterial Valorisation System, in which the Lipor Sorting Plant plays an essential role.
- The Composting Process aims to collect and treat the organic fraction of the waste in order to produce fertilizer.
- The Energy Recovery Plant produces energy from the fraction of the waste that cannot be valorised through composting or recycling processes.
INDUSTRIAL COMPOSTING
The organic waste represents around 40% of the MSW. The Industrial Composting Plant has a significant importance by giving an environmentally adequate treatment to a significant fraction of the waste produced.
- The Composting Plant can treat 60 000 tons of organic waste per year.
HOME COMPOSTING
Aiming to educate end raise the awareness of the population, particularly those in school age, we created Horta da Formiga - Home Composting Centre.
This centre is dedicated to demonstrate how to compost, its advantages and applications.
The centre has a biological kitchen garden and orchard with carefully selected species, where the resulting compost is used. |
