Terra à Terra, Home Composting Project
Terra à Terra is a project that aims to promote the organic waste reduction at the households of Lipor’s Municipalities.
The associated Municipalities of Lipor produce more than 500.000 tons per year of municipal solid waste that requires collection, transportation, treatment and final deposition. All this process has significant economic and environmental costs.
About 40% of the municipal solid waste is organic waste, than can partly be reduced through home composting. Composting is easily made at the households, having benefits as the exercise, the contact with nature, the soil improvement and a better environment. It is estimated that the home composting process allows an average reduction of 40 kg per year.
This project aims to promote the prevention of the organic waste production that is collected and treated in a centralised way, thus decreasing the environmental impact associated to the process and improving the quality of life of the population involved.
It is esteemed that the home composting project allows a reduction in more than 300Kg/year of organic waste per compositing bin. With this project we have a potential of reduction of about 3.000 ton/year. On the other hand, assuming that this waste won´t be treated at the energy recovery plant, we will prevent the emission of 528 ton CO2/year.
Those interested in receiving a free composting bin, must fill in the registration form, be over 18 years old and live in a house with a garden in the Project area or work in a company with garden in the Project area. After attending a free Composting Session, they will receive a composting bin.
The project is supported by Lipor in partnership with its associated Municipalities and has no costs to its participants.
Since the beginning of this project we delivered more than 3.500 composting bins.
