Project – Horta à Porta – Biological kitchen gardens of Porto’s Region
Horta à Porta - Biological kitchen gardens of Porto's Region, is a project aiming to promote the quality of life of the population, through better agricultural practices.

Although there are several projects related with home composting, educational kitchen gardens and organic farming in Porto's Region, they are spread and not easily accessible to the population.

The creation of a net of this nature has a great importance. In the attempt to optimize the existing areas, information and resources in the region, LIPOR launched the Project Horta à Porta.

This initiative allowed the creation of dynamic green areas but also the promotion of contact with Nature and healthful habits without forgetting the waste reduction.

Horta à Porta Project started in July 2003, due to the need of articulation of some entities in a net that made possible a strategy for the Porto's Region in the domain of Home Composting, creation of kitchen gardens and promotion of Organic Farming.

This project intends to provide kitchen gardens of 25 m2 each, to those interested in practising organic farming and composting.
When the kitchen gardens are attributed, the future farmer will attend an organic farming course (for amateurs!).

We want to provide the possibility to cultivate small kitchen gardens, guarantying the product quality, better health and environment.

The products are for personal consumption and both water and a warehouse for the tools are provided. Composting bins are also provided.

Subsistence Kitchen Gardens

First subsistence kitchen garden was created in Maia, in November 2009, and has 41 kitchen gardens of 100m2 each.
Promoting healthful habits, organic waste reduction, good agricultural practices, with subsistence and social responsability are the main goals.
To participate in Castêlo da Maia Subsistence Kitchen Garden project, it is required one of the following situations:
- have 3 or more children;
- family income can't be over than 20.000€ per year;
- at least, one of the family member must be unemployed.
In this project the products can be sold in a near market.
As Maia Municipality is our partner in this project, only the residents in Maia Municipality can apply to a kitchen garden here!
At this moment we have 16 kitchen gardens.

This project is supported by Lipor in partnership with the local authorities of  Aldoar, S. Pedro de Rates, Aver-o-mar and Maia and the Municipalities of Matosinhos, Póvoa de Varzim, Maia and Porto.

The success of the project is here for everyone to see!
