Composting is a biological process by which the microorganisms transform the organic matter, like manure, leaves, paper and food remains, in a material similar to soil called compost.
ADVANTAGES:
"Composting at home saves the transportation and waste deposition costs that otherwise wouldn’t have an environmentally adequate treatment."
- Using compost improves the structure of the soil and is a natural fertiliser.
- The compost has natural fungicides and organisms that help to fight pathogenic organisms that can cause disease in the soil and in the plants.
- Compost retains water in the soils.
- Compost reduces the use of herbicides and pesticides.
- Compost reduces air contamination and pollution.
- Participation of the citizens in lifestyle changes.
BENEFITS TO THE SOIL
Compost adds organic matter to the soil.
Helps to retain the water in sandy soils and adds porosity to clay soils.
Compost adds helpful organisms to the soil like fungi and bacteria that have the ability to transfer the nutrients from the soil minerals to the plants.
HOW TO USE IT?
The matured compost is used in lawns and as top dressing around flowers, shrubs and trees. A mix of 1/3 of compost, 1/3 of sand and 1/3 of soil is a rich fertiliser for young plants, long vases and houseplants. For landscape architectural projects, a mix of 60% of compost with 40% of soil is ideal for lawns, flowers, trees and young bushes.

AT THE FARM, COMPOST:
- Applied to plantations, adds organic matter, improves the soil structure, reduces the need of fertilizers and reduces the soil erosion potential;
- Can be stored for long periods of time, with no smell or flies;
- Can be used all year round;
- Eliminates or reduces problems of manure deposition, avoiding leaks and nitrate contamination of wells;
- Can also be used as cattle bedding;
Using it reduces the occurrence of plant diseases.
